He studied at the Provincial School of Art of Pinar del Río in 1975 and the Higher Institute of Art of Havana in 1979.
Segundo Planes belongs to an innovative generation of young Cuban artists who at the beginning of the 80s carried out an authentic transformation of national painting, leaving behind the proposals of the 60s and 70s.
Among his most important awards are the First Prize for Drawing and Painting of the II Provincial Hall of Pinar del Río, 1985; First Prize for Drawing, Painting and Sculpture of the IV Provincial Hall of Pinar del Río, 1986; First Prize of the I Salón Juan Francisco Elso in Havana, 1987; First Prize in Painting and Prize of the Cultural Property Fund, 1988, and First Prize of the International Association of Art Critics and Acquisition Prize of the National Museum of Fine Arts, 1989.
Currently, some of his works can be seen in the Cuban art collection of the National Museum of Fine Arts
He lives and works in Mexico.
